Joint Commission International names Jacob Thomas, MD, Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care, as Board of Commissioners chair

(OAK BROOK, Illinois, USA – 5 January 2021) – Jacob Thomas, MD, has been named chair of Joint Commission International (JCI) Board of Commissioners, effective 1 January 2021. Dr. Thomas is currently group medical advisor at Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care, Subang Jaya, Malaysia, and has been a member of JCI’s board since 2014.
As board chair, Dr. Thomas will lead the board by providing fiduciary oversight and strategic direction to aid in JCI’s mission to continuously improve the safety and quality of care in the international community through education, advisory services, and international accreditation and certification. Dr. Thomas will also oversee activities of the Board of Commissioners and its Executive Committee.
Paula Wilson, president and chief executive officer of JCI, notes, “I have had the privilege of working with Dr. Jacob Thomas for the last decade. Over that time, he has been an outstanding advocate for patient safety and a champion for JCI. We are all extremely pleased to have Dr. Thomas serve as chair of the JCI board.”
Dr. Thomas, an emergency medical doctor, has vast experience in hospital management, having served in various capacities at Subang Jaya Medical Centre, Malaysia, including as its executive director from 1998 till 2006.
Dr. Thomas also served as chairman of the Association of Private Hospitals of Malaysia (APHM) Board from 2008 till 2018, as well as chairman of the Board of Directors at Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care since its formation in 2013.
