JCI Accreditation Standards for Laboratories, 4th Edition Field Review Underway

Friday, January 08 2021

Joint Commission International (JCI) has begun development of the 4th edition of the JCI Accreditation Standards for Laboratories, scheduled for publication 1 July 2021, with an effective date of 1 January 2022. As part of standards development, we are seeking input from accredited organizations on the proposed standard during the field review period. The field review is a critical component of JCI standards development that allows for accredited laboratories, subject matter experts, and selected stakeholders to provide recommendations on how new and proposed accreditation standards impact patient care, quality improvement, and laboratory processes and procedures.

JCI is pleased to recognize your organization’s continuing dedication to quality patient care through accreditation by extending an invitation to representatives from your organization to participate in the field review of the 4th Edition Laboratory Standards. The field review is open from 8 January – 29 January 2021.

To obtain a full understanding of organizations’ experiences with the standards, we request that organizations select 1-2 individuals with direct knowledge of the standards and accreditation process. We suggest that these individuals be the Laboratory Director and Accreditation Coordinator, or similar role, as these staff typically have a broad technical understanding of the standards.

The 4th edition of the JCI Accreditation Standards for Laboratories is organized to include new chapters on Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (QPS) and Prevention and Control of Infections (PCI). The standard also expands the Quality Control Process (QCP) chapter to align with most recent advances in laboratory medicine and include requirements for different laboratory specialties.

In addition, the standards will include a crosswalk to ISO 15189: Medical laboratories — Requirements for quality and competence. This crosswalk will be developed as an additional Appendix to provide JCI accredited laboratories an equivalent compliance to ISO 15189.

For your reference, an outline is provided with the proposed standards along with the specific questionnaire that we request field review participants to complete.

The survey questionnaire may also be accessed separately through this link.

We would be grateful for your response by 29 January 2021, and we thank you in advance for your participation.
