Joint Commission International completes pilot using new technology during accreditation survey at Dubai hospital
(OAK BROOK, Illinois, USA, 8 April 2022) – Joint Commission International (JCI) today announced it has successfully completed a pilot using innovative technology during an accreditation survey at Medcare Women & Children Hospital in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Microsoft’s HoloLens (mixed-reality smart glasses) were operated during a hybrid survey from February 13-16, 2022.
During the survey, an on-site surveyor wore the HoloLens during specified tracers while JCI staff remotely observed the lens’ function through the surveyor. Tracer methodology, a key tool of JCI’s survey process, uses information from a healthcare organization to follow its experience of care, treatment or services for a number of patients throughout their entire healthcare delivery process. Information collected allows surveyors to review applicable standard requirements.

Hospital staff reported being comfortable with the HoloLens technology during survey and found the pilot to be an interesting experience. Additionally, the technology did not impede any tracer activity.
JCI is examining outcomes of the pilot to use in future testing and exploration of how the HoloLens and similar technology can enhance client engagement throughout the accreditation cycle and beyond.
