Featured Organization:  Beacon Dermatology

Beacon Dermatology is a dermatology clinic offering an extensive range of medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatological treatments that is part of the Beacon Hospital health system in Sandyford, Dublin, Ireland.  The system is managed through a partnership with University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre (UPMC).

For this feature, JCI interviewed Mr. Michael Cullen, the CEO of Beacon Medical Group.

JCI: Why did you seek to achieve JCI Accreditation?

Mr. Cullen:  Beacon Dermatology sought to achieve the prestigious JCI Accreditation in order to show the clinic’s commitment to providing excellence in safety standards and quality care. We feel this accreditation is testament to Beacon Dermatology's commitment to safety and hygiene standards. We are the first private dermatology clinic in Ireland to achieve this award.

JCI: Why did you choose to obtain accreditation from JCI?

Mr. Cullen:  JCI Accreditation is a prestigious award, only awarded to units that provide excellent safety standards and quality care. This is something our unit prides itself on and we sought JCI Accreditation to prove this.

JCI: What have been some of the positive impacts on your organization?

Mr. Cullen: Beacon Dermatology has become more aware of infection control; it has increased communication within the unit; patients are always thoroughly assessed at consultations; paper work is kept up to date and correct; staff are orientated if and when a new policy is introduced; and staff are assessed on a yearly basis.

JCI: How has JCI Accreditation improved your standing within your community?

Mr. Cullen:  Obtaining JCI has certainly improved our standing in the community and amongst the medical profession as both medical professionals and clients are now aware that our organisation provides excellence in safety standards and patient care. Also, Beacon Dermatology is the first private dermatology unit in Ireland to achieve this prestigious award.

JCI: How have patient safety and the quality of care improved within your organization?

Mr. Cullen:  Since obtaining JCI we have become more aware of patient safety and aim to improve the quality of care at all times.

JCI: Are there any other comments you would like to make?

Mr. Cullen:  JCI has provided our organization with the guidance we needed to run a successful, efficient, safe and quality unit.
