Publication and Effective Dates for 5th Edition International Standards for Hospitals and Academic Medical Centers Established
7 January 2013
Joint Commission International (JCI) is pleased to announce that the 5th Edition of its International Standards for Hospitals and International Standards for Academic Medical Center Hospitals will be published on 1 September 2013 and will be effective for all surveys beginning 1 April 2014. Enhancements to the on-site survey process, such as unannounced surveys and new types of tracers, will also be applicable to all surveys on or after 1 April 2014.
The 5th Edition standards have been in development since early 2012. During 2012, important stakeholder input was gathered from focus groups of accredited organizations around the world, interviews with hospital leaders, engagement of JCI surveyors and consultants, and a meeting of a newly appointed Standards Advisory Panel. From this input, standards are now being drafted for posting to the JCI website for public review prior to approval in early spring 2013 by the JCI Accreditation Committee.
The traditional publication and effective dates for the hospital standards, which are set by JCI staff, have been as follows: A new edition is published every three years on 1 July with an effective date of the subsequent 1 January. The 1 September 2013 publication date will give all accredited organizations an additional month (7 months rather than 6 months) to come into compliance with the new or revised standards. Also, the 1 April 2014 effective date provides an additional 3 months of accreditation under the 4th Edition of the standards. The change in dates will also permit translations of the standards to be available much earlier than in the past.
