JCI Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary
Joint Commission International (JCI) is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the publication of its first hospital standards in 2009.
The first edition of Joint Commission International Accreditation Standards for Hospitals was published in September 1999. The standards were developed for nearly two years, guided by a 16-member international task force composed of individual clinicians, managers, and other health care experts from around the world. Many of the original task force members still serve on JCI’s Standards Subcommittee and have been actively involved in developing subsequent standards for ambulatory care, care continuum, clinical laboratories, disease- or condition-specific care, medical transport, and primary care.
The first hospital to be accredited under the first edition of the hospital standards was Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in Sao Paulo, Brazil. That survey—completed in December 1999—culminated the testing of JCI’s onsite standards evaluation for the international community.
Ten years later, JCI has accredited or certified nearly 300 organizations and programs in 39 countries. A list of those organizations is available on the JCI Web site.
