Over a 30-year career, Sir Liam Donaldson, M.Sc., M.D., F.R.C.S.(Ed.), F.F.P.H.M., F.R.C.P., F.R.C.P.(Ed.), Fmed.Sci., F.R.C.A.,  has worked in all sectors of health care: hospital medicine, general practice, public health, academic medicine, health service management and central government.

In 1998, Sir Liam became the 15th chief medical officer for England. As such, he is the British Government's chief adviser on all health issues and has regularly led the UK delegation at the World Health Assembly.  He is a member of the European Chief Medical Officer's Committee, and is leading the patient safety program at the World Health Organization, the World Alliance for Patient Safety.

Sir Liam holds an honorary chair in Applied Epidemiology at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and has a prolific publication record including a standard text book of public health, and chapters contributed to 20 medical texts.

In 2002, Sir Liam received a knighthood in recognition of his achievements.
